On the other hand, the arrival of the year 2000 poses a monumental problem. Every computer that uses dates in some way-from nuclear power plant control rooms, to emergency rooms, to VCRs, PCs and air conditioning units-may be affected. The financial impact is staggering.

이것은 마이크로소프트의 2000년 솔루션 개발담당 제이슨 매튜소 이사가 새로운 천년에 대한 여러 예측들을 숙명적이고 암울한 것으로 받아들이고 있는 근심어린 고객들을 안심시키는 말이다.
(그러나) 다른 한편에서는, 2000년 문제의 귀결점이 어처구니 없는 문제로 비화될 소지를 보이고 있다. 원자력발전소 제어실에서부터 병원응급실, VCR, PC, 에어컨장치에 이르기까지 어떤 방법으로든 날짜를 사용하고 있는 모든 컴퓨터들은 영향을 받게 될지도 모른다. 금융상의 충격은 엄청나게 커지고 있다.
매튜소 이사는 최근 워싱턴주 레드먼드의 마이크로소프트 본사에서 가진 인터뷰에서 『2000년 문제는 사람들이 생각하고자 하는 것보다 훨씬 고차원의 판단이 요구되는 일』이라며 『(예컨대)그것은 자연스런 일, 즉 시스템이 중단되지 않았다면 복구하지 마라(복구할 필요가 있겠는가)』라는 식으로 설명했다.
