Back in 1996, Palm Computing released the revolutionary PalmPilot. Quickly garnering healthy sales, the PalmPilot gained a devoted following, which dubbed it the first useful palmsize PDA. The rest of the computing industry-especially Microsoft-sat up and took notice. Today, PDAs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, offering a wide array of features and functionality.
To find the best of the current palmtop breed, we took a group of the latest keyboardless devices and put them to the test. Unlike keyboardbased handhelds, these palmtops are truly pocketsized, making them better for data access than input. But don’t let the small size fool you: although some of these PDAs include only barebones contacts and scheduling capabilities, others are featurerich devices with everything from Webbrowsing capabilities to stereo audio support. Costs also vary, ranging from about $100 to almost $500.
