구제역(foot-and-mouth disease)이 돌아 한국 축산농가를 긴장시키더니 얼마 전엔 악질 컴퓨터 바이러스 「love bug」가 세계의 무수한 컴퓨터들을 농락한 바 있다. 오늘은 이 사건을 계기로 관련 용어들을 알아보자. 먼저 누군가가 바이러스를 만든다(write a virus), 그리고는 컴퓨터 사용자들을 유혹할 매력적인 이름을 짓는다(make an attractive name to entice the users like 「ILOVEYOU, Virus Alert!」 etc.), 그리고 나서는 이 바이러스를 처음으로 컴퓨터에 올리면(launch the virus) 이는 남의 컴퓨터 주소록에 침입한다(infiltrate someone’s computer address book), 이들은 빠른 속도로 컴퓨터를 전염시킨다(infect computers fast), 첨부파일을 여는 즉시 각종의 컴퓨터 파일을 파괴하고(destroy computer files the moment the user opens the attached file), 컴퓨터 시스템을 못쓰게 만든다(cripple/ravage computer systems), 진짜 바이러스의 경우처럼 스스로 번식을 하고(spread itself) 자신을 복제까지 한다(replicate itself), 곧 여러 개의 변종까지 생성된다(several variations appear/engender variants), 일단 감염이 되고 나면(if infected), 항바이러스 연구소(anti-virus labs) 등에서 백신을 다운로드 한다(download a vaccine from an anti-virus lab), 수사팀(investigation squad/investigators)은 바이러스가 맨처음 어디에서 발생했는지(where it has originated)와 용의자(suspect)를 찾는 데 수사력을 모은다.
