Wireless 3G-Still Stuck at 2.5?
3세대 무선 통신, 아직 2.5세대?
When first proposed, amid much hoopla, third-generation wireless service (3G) was touted as the best of both worlds-combining high-speed mobile access with Web-based services and delivering innovative methods to communicate, access information, do business, and be entertained.
But 3G went through a series of fits and starts, with many carriers opting to roll out intermediate technologies-‘2.5G networks’-in an effort to pacify an impatient customer base.
As the wireless industry slumped, along with the rest of the economy, it seemed that it might be stuck at 2.5G for the foreseeable future. However, a recent burst of activity has convinced most analysts that-at long last-3G wireless has arrived.
3세대 무선 통신 서비스는 처음 계획될 때, 초고속 이동통신과 웹 기반의 서비스를 하나로 묶고 통신, 정보 접근, 비즈니스 및 엔터테인먼트를 제공하는 혁신적인 수단이 될 것이라고 크게 선전됐다.
하지만 3세대 무선 통신은 많은 사업자들이 참을성이 없는 고객 기반을 진정시키기 위한 노력의 일환으로 중간 기술인 2.5세대 네트워크를 출시하기로 결정하면서 몇 번의 준비와 시작을 거듭했다.
경제 침체와 함께 무선 통신 업계도 불황을 겪게 됨에 따라 당분간은 2.5세대 무선 통신에 머물러 있을 것으로 보인다. 하지만 최근의 갑작스런 움직임으로 대부분의 분석가들은 마침내 3세대 무선 통신이 시작됐다고 확신하게 되었다.
