John: You wanted to see me, Prof. McClure?
Prof. McClure: Yes, John. Sit down. Well, I`ll get straight to the point. The TA who marked your most recent paper said that several sections of it had been copied from the Internet.
John: Oh, I…uh…I can explain. It`s just that I didn`t know how to footnote my Internet sources properly, so I just left those footnotes out.
Prof. McClure: Well, that`s really not acceptable, John. You know, the university takes plagiarism very seriously. If I were to report this to the Academic Department, you`d be expelled without a refund. But I`ve thought about it, and I`ve decided to turn a blind eye to it this time.
John: Oh, thank you. I really appreciate it. It won`t happen again, I promise.
Prof. McClure: Ensure it doesn`t, John. Next time, I won`t be so understanding.
John: 맥클루어 교수님, 저를 보시길 원하셨다면서요?
Prof. McClure: 네, 존. 앉으세요. 글쎄요, 단도직입적으로 이야기하죠. 가장 최근의 시험지를 점수 매긴 조교가 말하기를 몇몇 섹션이 인터넷으로부터 베껴졌다고 하던데요.
John: 오, 제가 설명드릴께요. 저는 인터넷 출처를 어떻게 각주를 다는지를 몰랐어요. 그래서, 각주를 달지 않았죠.
Prof. McClure: 글쎄, 이런 것은 받아들일 수 없어요, 존. 알다시피, 대학은 표절행위를 매우 심각하게 받아들이죠. 만약에 이것을 학생 학과에 보고한다면, 학생은 환불 없이 퇴학 당할 수도 있어요. 하지만 생각 끝에 이번에는 눈감아 주기로 했어요.
John: 고마워요. 정말 감사해요. 다신 이런 일 일어나지 않도록 약속 드려요.
Prof. McClure: 확실히 일어나지 않도록 해요, 존. 다음에는, 이렇게 이해해 주지 않을 테니까.
‘blind’는 ‘눈이 잘 안 보이는, ∼을 못 본’의 뜻이다. ‘turn a blind eye to∼’은 ‘∼을 못 본 척 하다, 눈감아 주다’라는 뜻이다.
