Learn the ropes
Chris: I guess you must be the new guy from Personnel. My name`s Chris.
John: John. Nice to meet you.
Chris: Mind if I grab a seat here?
John: No, be my guest. I was just reading over this training manual. Man, there`s a lot to learn. How long did it take you to learn the ropes?
Chris: Ah, you`ll get the hang of it in no time. Don`t sweat it. How`s the soup today?
John: Good. It`s cream of chicken.
Chris: Hold on, I`ll just go grab a bowl. Maybe I can answer some questions for you. I`m no expert, mind you, but I manage.
Chris: 인사부에 새로운 직원이시죠? 제 이름은 크리스예요.
John: 전 존이에요. 만나서 반가워요.
Chris: 여기 앉아도 될까요?
John: 네, 마음대로 하세요. 저는 이 교육용 매뉴얼을 읽고 있었거든요. 배울 게 많네요. 여기 일 적응하는 데 얼마나 걸렸어요?
Chris: 곧 익숙해지실 거예요. 문제 없어요. 오늘 수프는 어때요?
John: 좋아요. 오늘은 치킨 크림 수프에요.
Chris: 잠깐 만요. 저도 수프를 가져 올게요. 제가 당신의 몇몇 질문에 답해 줄게요. 전문가는 아니지만, 할 수는 있을 거에요.
‘learn the ropes’는 항해사가 처음 배를 탈 때 닻을 올리고 내리는 것을 연습한다는 것에서 유래해서, ‘어떤 일을 새로 배우고 적응하다’라는 의미다.
