Who to marry
결혼의 정의는 무엇일까요? 결혼이 무엇인지 머리로는 다들 알고 있지만 세상사가 아는 대로만 되지는 않는 듯 하군요.
“아마 한순간도 주저하지 않을 거야”라고 말할 때
“They wouldn’t think twice about it.”
Luke: Wendy, what’s up? You look so down today.
Wendy: Why does it have to be so damn complicated when it comes down to marriage?
Luke: Well, if you were married to a millionaire, it wouldn’t be that complicated. Parents wouldn’t ever even think twice if their daughter brought home one of those.
Wendy: Sort of but it’s more complicated because my fiance is from Afghanistan and he doesn’t exactly look like Korean. That upsets my parents.
Luke: Wendy, 오늘 굉장히 안좋아 보이네. 무슨 일이야?
Wendy: 왜 결혼 문제를 논하기만 하면 이렇게 복잡해지는 걸까?
Luke: 네가 만약 백만장자랑 결혼한다면 복잡할 게 없을걸. 내가 아는 모든 부모님들은, 딸이 백만장자와 결혼한다고 하면 주저하지도 않으시던데.
Wendy: 내 경우는 더 복잡해. 왜냐하면, 나와 결혼할 사람이 아프가니스탄에서 온 사람이라 한국사람이랑 아주 다르게 생겼거든. 바로 그것이 우리 부모님을 충격으로 몰고 간 거지.
Luke: Didn’t you say your parents were religious, even your dad is a priest. Aren’t they supposed to love others? It strikes me that they don’t like your fiance because he is not Korean.
Wendy: Well, my parents have been praying for my future husband- the one who is rich, handsome, kind, and who has a nice family background.
Luke: 너희 아버지 목사 아니셔? 모든 세상 사람을 사랑해야 하잖아. 너와 결혼할 사람이 한국인이 아니라서 반대하신다니 좀 충격적인데.
Wendy: 응. 우리 부모님은 내 남편감이 부자고, 잘생기고, 친절하고, 좋은 가정환경에서 자란 사람이었으면 좋겠다고 10년 동안 기도를 해 오셨거든.
