According to the New York Times, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a report on its “Advanced Air Transport (AAM) Action Plan”, which began partially in 2025 and runs air taxis in at least one place until 2028.
Air taxis are a means of transporting passengers and cargo by vertical takeoff and landing while the pilot is on board.
FAA deputy director Paul Fontaine said air taxis “will soon become a reality, and it's our job to prepare for it.”
The NYT stressed that the FAA's announcement is significant in that it has come up with a specific time to implement the system for next-generation aircrafts.
However, there are many difficulties for air taxis to succeed.
First of all, it could trigger a backlash over safety issues, which could lead to a ban. Therefore, it is necessary to go through individual certification to meet the FAA standards.
Limited battery capacity can also limit the operation of air taxis. For now, it is only possible to transport limited passengers and cargo from cities like New York to airports.
In order to operate an air taxi, land and infrastructure must be developed. It should also hire qualified pilots with the consent of the residents. Above all, low prices are important for the public to use.
Currently, Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation are the leading air taxi development companies and are aiming for service in 2025.
